Race against winter six months after devastating Nepal earthquake: UN humanitarian official

 The top United Nations humanitarian official and country team for Nepal on Friday stressed that shelter and food remain top priorities as winter approaches six months after the April earthquake and its aftershocks that devastated the Himalayan country.
They further urged for the quick resolution of fuel shortage such that “winter goods can be quickly delivered to vulnerable households”.
UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said with the Government of Nepal, humanitarian partners provided emergency shelter to over 700,000 families, but the effect of the coming harsh cold weather is a concern with many people still without permanent durable housing.

Ryan and Moira Goepfert were elated when they were selected for student housing at Columbia University. The move would put them in a renovated doorman building across from campus, and it would save them $600 a month in rent. But after Mr. Goepfert visited the quiet hallways of the university building, the couple turned down the offer. “Almost 100 percent of the reason was our daughter, Grace, and the relationships she’s built on our floor,” said Mr. Goepfert, 34, who is pursuing a degree at Columbia’s School of General Studies. The Goepferts live in a one-bedroom rental on West 119th Street in  Harlem . Their floor has six children between the ages of 4 months and 7 years and the family next door has a baby on the way. NASA Rover Finds Evidence That Mars Once Had Lakes

Mars' massive Mount Sharp may have formed billions of years ago as water carried sand and silt into the center of a large crater. ASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS Mars is cold and dry, but billions of years ago, it was cold and wet. That's according to new evidence from NASA's  Curiosity rover , which is currently exploring a large crater on Mars. The rover has found geological evidence that lakes of liquid water existed in the crater 3.5 billion years ago. "The lakes may have existed for hundreds of thousands of years," says  John Grotzinger , a researcher at Caltech and chief scientist for the rover. But he adds, the lake network may have stuck around for millions of years. This is the second big water announcement NASA has made about Mars recently.
