Apple adds Retina displays to its iMacs

Photo: APNEW YORK: Apple is adding Retina displays to its iMacs, which will enhance the text and the image quality of photos and videos. The Cupertino, California-based company said its 21.5-inch iMac will have a Retina 4K display, while every 27-inch iMac will have a Retina 5K display. The 21-inch iMac, which starts at $1,099, and 27-inch iMac, which starts at $1,799, are available in three models and come standard with a new Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse 2. The technology giant redesigned Magic devices including the Magic keyboard, Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Trackpad 2. Those products have rechargeable batteries. The new trackpad marks the first time Apple has made its Force Touch Trackpad feature available for a desktop. Force Touch allows users access to several shortcuts by touching the trackpad in different ways. Apple said the iMacs will also have new storage options and more powerful processors and graphics. Apple first introduced the iMac in 1998 as its primary desktop computer offering and revamped it many times since. In recent years Apple has focused on faster growing products such as the iPhone, which account for about half of Apple’s sales, iPads and laptops as sales of traditional desktop PCs slump. Apple Inc.’s stock rose 48 cents to $112.09 in morning trading Tuesday. Its shares have risen almost 2 percent so far this year.

Ryan and Moira Goepfert were elated when they were selected for student housing at Columbia University. The move would put them in a renovated doorman building across from campus, and it would save them $600 a month in rent. But after Mr. Goepfert visited the quiet hallways of the university building, the couple turned down the offer. “Almost 100 percent of the reason was our daughter, Grace, and the relationships she’s built on our floor,” said Mr. Goepfert, 34, who is pursuing a degree at Columbia’s School of General Studies. The Goepferts live in a one-bedroom rental on West 119th Street in  Harlem . Their floor has six children between the ages of 4 months and 7 years and the family next door has a baby on the way. Especially in the winter, the children hang out in the 12-by-15-foot landing outside the elevator. They ride their scooters down the hallway and kick around a ball. NASA Rover Finds Evidence That Mars Once Had Lakes

Mars' massive Mount Sharp may have formed billions of years ago as water carried sand and silt into the center of a large crater. ASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS Mars is cold and dry, but billions of years ago, it was cold and wet. That's according to new evidence from NASA's  Curiosity rover , which is currently exploring a large crater on Mars. The rover has found geological evidence that lakes of liquid water existed in the crater 3.5 billion years ago. "The lakes may have existed for hundreds of thousands of years," says  John Grotzinger , a researcher at Caltech and chief scientist for the rover. But he adds, the lake network may have stuck around for millions of years. This is the second big water announcement NASA has made about Mars recently.
