The boy, 15, was seized after a raid at his family home in the wake of the cyber-attack – one of the biggest to have hit the UK. It has emerged that the teenager wanted to be a professional video gamer. Neighbours in Ballymena, Co Antrim, said six police vehicles swooped on Monday afternoon. One, who did not want to be named, said: “It is just mad. I knew nothing about it until I came home and saw all the police just before 5pm. Then they left with bags of equipment.” Friends said the teenager was “quiet and shy” and was often seen with a skateboard. Kathy Haveron, 39, s

Why Pakistani Hindus leave their homes for India

Image
Pakistani Hindus, who have arrived in the Indian capital in recent months, tell BBC Hindi's Zubair Ahmed that they fled their homes to escape discrimination and religious persecution. Mala Das can just about write her name. At 16, this has been her greatest achievement. "When I came here I was completely unlettered. Today I can write my name," she says. But Mala is still unsure about numbers - when asked about the year she came to India, she draws a blank. Her family and neighbours say they arrived in 2011 from the Pakistani city of Hyderabad to escape "religious and cultural persecution and government apathy". Her daughter Khandalyce's body was found in a suitcase by the side of the road five years later, 1100km (685 miles) from where her mother was buried Australian police say they are hunting for fraud suspects linked to the murder of a young mother and her daughter. On Tuesday authorities revealed that Karlie Jade Pearce-Stevenson's bank account had been accessed hundreds of times after she was killed. Police also said an impersonator called her family and convinced them to deposit more money into her account. The details come as her family placed a tribute to her in a local newspaper. "The sun doesn't shine as bright as it did but the night is now lit with a few more stars," Ms Pearce-Stevenson's father and brother wrote in the piece published in the classified section of  the NT News. Sydney college mis-sold diplomas to vulnerable students, watchdog says

Image
Thinkstock Image caption Only a tiny fraction of the college's students graduated in the second half of last year A private college in Sydney has been accused by Australia's consumer watchdog of mis-selling diploma courses to vulnerable students, earning itself millions of dollars in federal loans. The watchdog says Unique International College misled students about loan repayments and the cost of courses, calling its conduct "unconscionable". Media reports say it will ask the college to repay A$57m (40.6m; £26.6m) in government funding. The college has not yet commented. A claim against the college has been filed in the federal court following an investigation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and New South Wales Fair Trading. According to  a statement on the ACCC's website , the college enrolled more than 3,600 students in diploma courses during the 2014-15 financial year, which earned it A$57m in government funding. Syria conflict: Iran to be invited to key talks, US says

Image
Iran is likely to be invited for the first time to international talks with the US and Russia over the Syrian conflict, the US says. US state department spokesman John Kirby said it was unclear if Iran's leaders would attend the talks in Vienna later this week. Top envoys from the US, Russia, Arab and European nations are taking part. Syria's Western-backed opposition and the US's Gulf Arab allies have long opposed Iran's role in the Syrian war. Mr Kirby told reporters on Tuesday that he expected Iran "to be invited to participate" in the talks in Vienna. "Whether they come or not is up to Iranian leaders," he said. "It's important for us that key partners are in these discussions... They [Iran] could be a key partner, but they are not now." Separately, the US said it was prepared to intensify its campaign against IS, which is also known by the acronym ISIL. The US has been carrying out air strikes against the group in Syri

Legend Lauds Kelly

http://www.v8supercars.com.au//news/championship/legend-lauds-kelly V8 Supercars great Mark Skaife has praised Rick Kelly’s performance over the weekend, resulting in a podium finish for Nissan in Sunday’s race at the Castrol Gold Coast 600. Despite dropping back from 14th to 23rd on the first lap with David Russell behind the wheel, the team and Kelly were able to salvage a strong result with clever strategy and a brilliant fuel saving drive by the 2006 V8 Supercars Champion. The Jack Daniel’s Nissan suffered from an unusual strategy call in Saturday’s race, with the team attempting two stints on the Dunlop soft tyre, but thinking outside the box worked for them on Sunday and delivered Nissan its first podium of the endurance season. “They did a great job to save the fuel that Rick Kelly did – he’s a very underrated guy,” Skaife said on Inside Supercars. “Remember, he’s been a champion before, he’s driving very well, some of his qualifying performances this year have been very

Frosty feeling the heat

Gold Coast winning co-driver Jack Perkins believes Craig Lowndes has momentum on his side as he fights Ford rival Mark Winterbottom for the 2015 V8 Supercars Championship. Perkins raced his last event for 2015 on the weekend and earned his first V8 Supercars race win with James Courtney on Sunday, after filling the primary driver role at the previous enduros with the Holden Racing Team. After a tough run for Winterbottom and the Prodrive team on the Gold Coast, Lowndes’ deficit is now 248 points, with three rounds remaining and a maximum 900 on offer. Perkins says Prodrive better watch out – the team’s Holden rivals next door are coming hard and fast. “The best strategy is normally car speed – if you’ve got car speed, very rarely do you lose a race,” Perkins said last night on Inside Supercars. “Earlier in the year the PRA guys and Mark in particular had that. But now Chaz is gone they seem to have lost a little bit of momentum there and I think the momentum is with Re

Lee Haskins ready for 'magical' Las Vegas debut

Image
Bristol boxer Lee Haskins says he has dreamed of fighting in Las Vegas his whole life and cannot wait for his debut at the "magical" home of boxing. The 32-year-old will challenge IBF bantamweight world champion Randy Caballero on 21 November. He won the interim belt in June by stopping Japan's Ryosuke Iwasa. "It's a magical place for boxing and it's a place where every boxer wants to fight at least once," Haskins told BBC Radio Bristol. "I've got an opportunity to fight over there which is something I will have for the rest of my life and something I can share with my grandkids." Caballero has not fought since October 2014 because of injury and Haskins, who will head to the United States on 3 November to acclimatise, is relishing the opportunity. "The amount of training to do is very daunting to me and I still have got a lot of work to do before I see light at the end of the tunnel. "Just to stand there and win a w

Amir Khan: I am the frontrunner to face Manny Pacquiao

Image
wolrdsportnews Amir Khan says he is the favourite to face Manny Pacquiao in the Filipino boxing legend's final fight. Khan had earlier suggested the match was unlikely  but now believes there is a "big chance" of taking on the seven-weight world champion. Alongside Khan, Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum has also named Terence Crawford and Tim Bradley as possible contenders for his star's last bout. "I am the front-runner," Khan told BBC Sport. "Manny Pacquiao makes a good story because we've been training partners and I've been with his coach Freddie Roach. "There's a big chance of the fight happening, it's all about making sure my team is on point with the deal and they need to make sure they get the fight that I want." Khan hoped to be Floyd Mayweather Jr's final opponent before the multiple world champion opted to fight Andre Berto instead but Khan believes Pacquiao, 36, is looking for a higher profile  end

Hong Kong Open: Justin Rose claims narrow victory

Image
world news England's Justin Rose has won his eighth European Tour title with victory at the Hong Kong Open. Lucas Bjerregaard moved two shots ahead of Rose on the ninth, but a birdie for the Englishman on the 10th and bogey for the Dane on 11 levelled things. Bjerregaard double bogeyed the 14th and Rose hit a two-under 68 to finish on 17 under, one clear of the 24-year-old. England's Matthew Fitzpatrick finished tied in third on 11 under while countryman Ian Poulter tied for 29th. Fitzpatrick, who won the British Masters at Woburn a fortnight ago, was primed to finish third on his own. However, three bogeys and a birdie in his final four holes saw the 21-year-old drop back to 11 under. Poulter, who made a last-minute journey from Orlando to play this week in order to help maintain his European Tour membership, finished at five under after a closing 69.

Mosque blasts kill 55 in NE Nigeria

Image
Maiduguri: Two bomb blasts ripped through mosques in northeast  Nigeria  on Friday, killing at least 55 people and injuring more than 100, as Boko Haram fighters seized a town in neighbouring Cameroon. The attacks in Maiduguri, Yola and Kerawa again underlined the persistent national and regional threat from the Islamist militants, despite military claims of gains. Fears will be heightened particularly in Maiduguri, which has been hit six times this month, killing a total of 76 people, according to an AFP tally. Questions will also again be raised about how the militants are able to carry out such attacks on a regular basis, after similar attacks in the city last month claimed 117 lives. The bombings also demonstrated the challenges facing the United States, which last week announced the deployment of up to 300 military personnel to northern Cameroon. The contingent will conduct surveillance and intelligence operations against Boko Haram, including within Nigeri
